Witherite crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of crystals of witherite, or barium carbonate. These crystals have been grown in the presence of block copolymers, blocks of different polymerised monomers. This causes the formation of different crystals structures depending upon the block copolymer used. Witherite is a rare mineral found in low temperature mineral veins, often associated with the lead ore galena. Magnification: x8330 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
