The inner court of the building is abeautiful sight with its cool-looking tiny foun-tains playing. Dispensing with our shoes, wewent up a flight of marble steps to a large and airyroom above the level of the ground, supportedby numerous fine alabaster columns, and its floorcovered with handsome old carpets. The reverentquiet of the place was delightfully soothing to thesenses. On the northern extremity of the town is alarge block of barracks, quite imposing in ap-pearance, where the garrison is housed. [94]. Q<O LA GALLE TO CONSTANTINE Our guide, a nice, quiet Arab, whose serviceswe had engaged at the hotel, volunteered to showus his home. He was a Jew, and as all Jewshouses in this part of the world are painted blueon the outside, we found his house no exception tothe rule. On entering it we found a clean littlecourtyard in which were two women, the guideswife and his mother busily engaged in cookingsomething in a corner. The wife was only a childof thirteen, who had been purchased by him for1,600 francs, Payne and I agreed that he had paidfar too much; everyone has his own views onmatters of this kind. The sleeping apartmentson the upper floor were very clean and airy, andboth Payne and I were not a little surprised atthe general atmosphere of comfort and well-being. During the afternoon we witnessed from thesteps of the hotel, the passing of an Arab funeralacross the square. It was a very sad and impres-sive sight.
