German theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546), a seminal figure in the Reformation for his rejection of Roman Catholic teaching and practices, is among Protestant reformers and scholars portrayed in sgraffito medallions on the gabled façade of the burgher house at Míru náměstí 453 in Slavonice, South Bohemia, Czechia / Czech Republic. Luther’s refusal to renounce his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V led to his excommunication from the church and condemnation as an outlaw. The house was built around 1573, some 27 years after his death.

Slavonice, South Bohemia, Czechia / Czech Republic: the German theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546), a seminal figure in the Reformation for his rejection of the teaching and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, is amongst the leading Protestant reformers and scholars portrayed in decorative sgraffito medallions on the gabled façade of the late-16th century burgher house at Míru náměstí (Peace Square) 453. Luther was a priest, professor of theology and writer who disputed the Roman Catholic view on indulgences - ways of reducing punishment and penalties for sin. His refusal to renounce all his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1521 resulted in his excommunication from the church and his condemnation as an outlaw by the emperor. The house at Míru náměstí 453 was built in about 1573, some 27 years after Luther’s death. Slavonice is a small town lying close to the Austrian border. It is one of a number of settlements in the former historical regions of Bohemia and Moravia renowned for well-preserved wall decorations in sgraffito, the ancient artistic technique of scratching or cutting away parts of a surface layer of plaster, stucco or paint to expose a background of a different colour or texture.
