Oesophageal varices in Banti's syndrome. Endoscopic view of varices (dilated blood vessels) in the oesophagus of a patient with Banti's syndrome. Oesophageal varices are extremely dilated sub-mucosal veins (varices) in the lower third of the oesophagus. They are most often a consequence of portal hypertension - high blood pressure in the portal vein and its tributaries. Banti's syndrome is a chronic congestive enlargement of the spleen resulting in premature destruction of red blood cells by the spleen.
