The Red Soil area of Dongchuan is a high-altitude farming area, where Han Chinese farmers grow mainly potatoes and buckwheat. The region has a low level of mechanization and horses and buffaloes are frequently used as farm animals. Output is low and poverty is high. The area is becoming a popular destination for Chinese photographers.
