Osprey V22 climbing away

Osprey V22 manufactured by Bell Boeing at Farnborough Airshow 2006 flying in forward mode . Pictured from ground level at the Farnborough Air Display climbing left to right . The large propellers and twin finned tailplane give it a unique appearance . Osprey is a tiltrotor VSTOL Vertical or Short Takeoff and Landing multi mission aircraft to be used by the United States Marine Corps . It combines the operational advantages of a vertical take off helicopter with the speed and fuel efficiency of a turboprop medium range aircraft . It is powered by two Rolls RoyceT406 AD 400 turboshaft engines rated at 4400 kilowatts kW maximum continuous power each of which can power both rotors in the event of one engine failure . The entire rotor transmission and engine nacelles tilt through 90 degrees in forward rotation and are directed forwards for forward flight . It can also move through 7 point 5 degrees in aft rotation for vertical take off and landing . Its development has been bugged by political issues over its cost . However with working payload of 24 combat troops a combat range of some 200 nautical miles nm and a ferry range of 500 nm with a single in flight refuelling speed at 250 knots at maximum take off weight it is a very useful all round aircraft . Vertical max take off weight is about 47500 lbs and using a short take off about 55000 lb . It can also be literally folded up to a compact space for shipping from 57 feet 4 inches by 84 feet 7 inches by 22 feet 1 inch to 63 feet 0 inches by 18 feet 5 inches by 18 feet 1 inch which is just under a fifth of original size by volume . That is a very impressive fold up ratio .
