The advantages claimed for the pyramidal-headed treewith a central leader over the open-headed tree are: (1) thelimbs are smaller in proportion to the body of the tree and are, therefore, less liable to split down when they break off; (2) ifone is broken off, it is only a small part of the tree and there istherefore less injury than would be the case if a limb of anopen-headed tree were broken off; (3) the limbs are also shorterand not so badly bent under a load of fruit; (4) the body ofthe tree and main limbs are in a measure protected from thedirect rays of the sun and thus not so likely to suffer from sunscald in winter; (5) if the tree is neglected for a year or two, smaller injury results than with the open-headed tree. There are some distinct disadvantages, however, with thisform of head. These are: (1) it is very difficult to maintainthe central leader after the tree gets o
