This piece of equipment shines a fine beam of light into the patient's eye, while magnifying lenses allow the ophthalmologist to examine the area where the light falls. Some serious eye disorders, such as glaucoma, are initially symptomless and can only be detected by this type of examination. A healthy individual should have an eye test every two years.
