August 15th. Keeping a north-easterly course, ourwhole days march was over a broad plain with fewundulations, and no hills or mountains near; the roadgood as before. The day was damp and cloudy. At4 oclock, p. m., we stopped, having travelled abouttwenty miles. We now approached the most dreaded portion ofour journey since crossing the Tucson desert, south ofthe Gila. This was the Medanos, or Sand-hills. Allthe emigrants we had met spoke of these, and thegreat difficulties that attended their passage. Bydoubling their ox-teams, that is, by putting from 12to 15 oxen to each wagon, they had succeeded inpassing them. Two trips were thus required for each. ft :
