"The Heroes with Grimy Faces"; Bronze memorial statue erected in memory of the firefighters who died in London during World War II, UK, PETER GRANT

Outside Wren House, at the top of Peter's Hill, and just a few steps away from St. Paul's Cathedral is this memorial, which contains the names of the 1027 firemen and over 24 firewomen who died in the line of duty during the war. The Prime Minister of the time, Winston Churchill, coined the phrase, "Heroes with grimy faces", referring to all firefighters. Indeed, the Cathedral would not be here today were it not for them.
