King Richard II of England, c1390. Artist: Anon
King Richard II of England, c1390. The reign of Richard II (1367-1400) began in 1377 and was characterised by intermittent periods of tension between the king and the barons. In 1399 he was captured at Flint Castle in Wales before being taken to the Tower of London where he was forced to abdicate by Henry Bolingbroke, who declared himself King Henry IV. Richard was then imprisoned in Pontefract Castle where he either starved to death or was murdered early in 1400. Found in the collection of the Westminster Abbey, London.
