There was unrest amongst the crowd. Captain of the City Guard of Edinburgh, killed a man standing in the crowd, making the crowd more violent. As panic set in, Porteous ordered the troopers to shoot directly into the mob which led to six more deaths.

However, in so doing, they wounded people in the surrounding tenement buildings, making the crowd more violent. As panic set in, Porteous ordered the City Guard to shoot directly into the mob which led to the deaths of another six people.
