Me., August 11, 1839, the third son of thefamily of (children. lie was fitted for collegeat the Bortland iVcademy and Professor Woodsschool at Yarmouth, Me. He entered Dait-mouth College from which he was graduated in 1858. Having determined upon makingthe [jrofession of law his life work, he Ijeganstudy in tlie office of Shepley & Dana, Port-land, and completed his course in the office ofBenjamin R. Curtis in Boston. Upon his ad-mission to the bar he opened a law office inPortland, where he has pratticed his profes-sion ever WILLIAM HENRY CLIKIOKD. During eight ur ten years be served as com-missioner of the United States Circuit Courtfor tlie district of Maine, and a very large por-tion of the connuitnients for \iolation of theFederal statutes were, for a series of ,made in his court. Later he ac(|uired an ex-tensive j)ractice in the Fedeial courts of thisand neighboring circuits, ami in tlie SupremeCourt at Washington. He is the author ofCliffords Reports (four vohnnes), a compilationof .Justice Clillbrds decisions on the New Fng-lanil Circuit. iNlr. Clifford has from an early period in hislife taken an active part in the })olitical con-tests in Maine on the Democratic side and hasshaied in the fortunes of his [)arty in thisState.
