Homotherium hunting Irish elk. Artwork of two Homotherium scimitar-toothed cats attacking a female Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus). Homotherium is an extinct member of the sabre-toothed cat family (Machairodontinae), which lived throughout Africa, Eurasia and North America between 3 million to 10,000 years ago. The Irish elk was one of the largest deer that ever lived. It ranged across Eurasia from around 400,000 to 8000 years ago. It was over 2 metres high at the shoulder, with the male having large antlers.
