Simulated crystal planes. Map plotting the orientations of atomic planes for a simulated face-centred cubic crystal. The Y-axis (short side) gives the orientation of the planes above and below a reference point (elevation) and the X-axis (long side) shows their radial orientation perpendicular to the elevation around the same reference point (azimuth). So the X and Y coordinates give a specific orientation in terms of elevation and azimuth angle. The colour indicates whether planes are present with a given orientation; blue where there are no planes aligned with that orientation, and red where they are strongly aligned.
