As I have said, we have not yet much data to substantiate this view. Our problem, of course, is to determine at what soil saturation infection takes place. This must be done by means of well-planned experinionts and with np- paratus especially constructed for the work. Whon we are able to say in what range of temperature and in what range of soil saturation infection can take place, we can, I believe, shift either one or both of these conditions in our greenhouses in such a way that con- trol of the disease is possible. At any rate, I believe that we can reduce the losses to a minimum. As a matter of interest, I might add a statement from a letter which I re- ceived several weeks ago. I quote from this letter because it substantiates, in a way, the view I have given. This writer says: "Our extremely heavy loss in the benches last year was practically all due to ; And again in the same letter: "The big surprise is that this year we have lost not more than 300 plants out of 55,000 and about NEW YORK CITY ADOLPH MEYER Sfh^*" BO
