Lucca, Tuscany, Italy: threshing wheat and picking grapes, depicted as the Labours of the Months for July and August, in finely carved but badly decayed medieval marble bas-reliefs below Zodiac signs for Leo and Virgo, in a Romanesque blind arcade flanking the central portal in the west facade of the Duomo or Cattedrale di San Martino. The weathered cycle of carvings, dating from circa 1230, may be by Lombard master sculptor Guido or Guidetto di Bonagiunta Bigarelli, known as Guido da Como (1220 - c. 1257). The Lucca cathedral portico is said to have once sheltered money-changers who traded with travellers using the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route linking Rome to Canterbury, England, via France and Switzerland.
