Cell membrane. Computer artwork of a section through an animal cell showing transmembrane proteins in the cell membrane. The membrane of the cell consists of a dual layer of phospholipids (dark blue), with the hydrophobic lipid tails in the centre and the hydrophilic phosphate groups on either side. Spanning the membrane are various transmembrane proteins that act as channels allowing the movement of molecules and ions in and out of the cell. This process can be passive (blue) or selective (green).
