A mountain sunset over a sea of valley mist in the Pennines, west of Halifax, United Kingdom

Under high pressure, anticyclonic weather conditions, air subsidence and compression warming of the air aloft causes an inversion, so the air over the hills is warmer than that in the valleys. Cold, heavy air trapped in the valleys gives rise to extensive fog formation or a dramatic sea of valley mist below the clear skies aloft.
