Austro-Hungarian military balloon, First World War. Kite balloon being used by the Austro-Hungarian Army at Tarnopol (today in Ukraine, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) on the Eastern Front during the First World War (1914-1918). During this war, a variety of aerial reconnaissance methods were developed to direct artillery fire and map enemy positions. These included aircraft and observation balloons. Kite balloons were more aerodynamically stable than round balloons. This official German photograph was taken in August 1917.
