Fish Antoine Vollon (French, 1833-1900). Fish, 1871-1875. Oil on canvas, 12 7/8 x 18 3/8 in. ( x cm). Antoine Vollon depicted this mound of freshly caught fish in a dynamic manner that merges his subject with the substance and movement of paint itself. Slippery fish are evoked in long brushstrokes and touches of color, while a wicker basket and bed of reeds are partially conjured through marks that appear to have been scratched into the still-wet paint with the brush handle.
