Underground water storage cisterns beneath the remains of houses in the ancient city of Carthage, near modern-day Tunis. The architectural style is known as Punic (after the Phoenicians, known to the Romans as Carthaginians). Furling roof edges (not seen) collected rain water which drained down channels cut into the walls into the cisterns beneath. The cisterns were lined with white concrete. This architecture retained precious water and kept both house and water cool.
