It is often advisable to 86 ORAL ANAESTHESIA inject in two directions to reach all the superior alviolarbranches. The horizontal direction will reach the posteriorsuperior alviolar branches, while the more vertical directionwill reach the middle superior alviolar nerve, in the case thisis given off before the maxillary nerve enters the infra-orbitalcanal. The zygomatic injection gives also anaesthesia of thebuccal part of the gum. Inject 2 Anaesthesia occurs inten minutes and lasts one hour. (See Tables III and IV.). Fig. 54. INFRA-ORBITAL INJECTION Palpitate the infra-orbital foramen and place upon it thetip of the thumb or index finger. With one of the other fingersretract the upper lip and after preparing the place, insert thelong needle in the canine fossa, as high as the reflection of themucous membrane allows.
