A mile and a half below he hadshot a large brown bear ; wounded and maddened by the pain,the huge animal had turned and pursued him; but from weak-ness, by the loss of blood, could not overtake him. CaptainLewis and seven men immediately set out to find the bear j andtracking him by the blood to a thick brushwood, where he haddug with his paws a bed two feet deep, despatched him. Thiswas their first conflict with the terrible animal, so dreaded that. A CLOSE SHAVE. ^ we had rather encounter two Indians than meet a single brownbear.
