This rocket used solid, liquid and cryogenic fuel for propulsion. It launched GSAT-2, an experimental communications satellite, into Earth orbit on 8 May 2003. It also carried four experimental payloads. The payload is contained in the topmost part of the rocket. GSLV- D2 launched from Sriharikota, an island on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, north of Chennai.
