The substructures consisted of cloistralapartments, the Chapel of S. Laurence (in which thereare traces of paintings), and passages from the Canonshouses, which lay to the north. There was a school connected with the cathedral atElne in the early years of the twelfth century, held inthe cloister, the teachers living in the upper story(destroyed in 1827). The communal school is nowhoused close by. The shafts are very varied in design—some octa-gonal, many twisted and channelled, some panelled as.
