High in the airhangs a big votive model of a ship, with a tricolour of dispro-portionate size behind ; but there are suspended relics of greaterhistorical interest. The little town has a glorious surname, Belle Defense, becausein 1636 the inhabitants successfully defended the place againstthe imperial army under General Gallas. The helmet and swordof the officer who commanded the defenders are still preservedin the church, and the event is celebrated by a public festivalwhich was at first intended to take place every hundred interval of a century was, however, thought to be too longand that of fifty year
