Train leaving Waverley train station in Edinburgh, with greenery around. An engine at the station, with electric lines around
The Waverly Train Station (and the bridge right next to it) are located right in the heart of the city of Edinburgh. The station is at a lower level than the road, and is fairly large, catering to all the tourists who arrive in the city from London and other locations in the country. Unlike train stations in many other cities and countries, the train station here is surrounded by greenery, and make a nice picture overall. The Waverly Train Station is massive, covering an area of around 25 acres (and is the second largest railway station in Great Britain, next only to London Waterloo). In terms of Scotland, it is the second busiest train station after Glasgow Central. The station is located in a low area, being located in a valley which was earlier actually holding a lake, called Nor Loch (which was created in the 15th century as a defensive mechanism and which grew filthy over the next few centuries until it was finally drained and started being used for alternate purposes by the year 1820). In the 1840's, there were train stations built in this valley which were combined to become the Waverley train station (named after the books by Sir Walter Scott). In 1868, all of these existing stations were demolished and a new one built, which was extended in the late 19th century.
