Hans Carl von Carlowitz (1645-1714), German forester, tax accountant and mining administrator. Carlowitz is best known for his book on forestry 'Sylvicultura oeconomica' (1713). In this work, he advocated for sustainable felling and planting of trees to avoid the scarcity of timber that was threatening the mining industry in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) of Germany.
