FUNDS CONTRIBUTED—WORK TO BEGIN ON CRANBERRY PICKER Concerning the problem of a picking machine, "Cranberry Co- operative News", August issue, reports the following: The Aluminum Company of America has given $4000 to the Washington Agricultural Experi- ment Station at the State College at Pullman, Washington, to de- velop a cranberry harvester to harvest berries at the rate of at least 500 pounds per hour with lit- tle injury to the berry. William Johnson, assistant agri- cultural engineer, reports the use of light aluminum and magnesium alloys is contemplated as a step to overcome the present heavy weight of cranberry harvesters. The work of developing the new lightweight machine will be di- rected by Mark T. Buchanan, head, of the department of farm man- agement and agricultural econom- ics. The active direction will be under L. J. Smith, head of the department of agricultural engi- neering. The aims set up for the cran-.
