(2005), The First Destroyers, p. 80, indicates that the tail of a Royal Navy pennon flying from the top of the mast can be seen just behind it. Given its length, this may be a commissioning pennant. Spiteful's round-topped, 'turtleback' forecastle was a common feature on Royal Navy ships of its type at the time.
