Demonstration of atmospheric pressure, illustration. In this experiment, air is heated in an empty soft drinks can (left). The can is then turned upside down using tongs, and placed in a dish of shallow water. Heating has driven some air out of the can, and the air left inside cools down, which further reduces its pressure. Atmospheric pressure (blue arrows) outside the can is much greater, and as a result the can crumples (right).
