He produced his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border in1802. his Lay of the Last Minstrel in 1805, his Tales of My Land-lord in 1807, and Marmion in 1808. Schiller, one of the greatest poets of Germany, died in 1805, hav-ing produced his famous drama of William Tell in the precedingyear. The philosopher Hegel ended his Jena lectures in 1806, and in1807 published his Phenomenology of Spirit. The general manners and customs of society in these years werea curious mixture of ancient and modern.
