Calcium. Sample of metallic calcium made by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808. Davy made this by the electrolysis of a mixture of calcium oxide and mercury (II) oxide. Calcium is element 20 and has the symbol Ca. It is a soft, grey metal in Group II of the periodic table. Calcium is essential to the function of cells and its compounds are mineralised in bone, teeth and the shells of many creatures. This sample is preserved at the Royal Institution, London.
