A Jesuit priest named Mermet hadcharge of the spiritual affairs of this detachment andhe established a mission which he called Assumption. To this place the Indians were attracted and FatherMermet preached the first Christian sermon in theOhio valley. Its earlier purpose seems to have beenof a missionary nature and the records state thatfor fifty years or more the place was of secondary im-portance. By about 1757 the French had become strong inthe Mississippi valley as far south as the Ohio. Kas-kaskia and Cahokia were prosperous places and theirmanners, society and military bearing gave to themthe famed appellation, The Paris of the West. FortChartres was
