There is scarcely a yard so small, either in country or city, that room for from one to a dozen or more grape vines cannot be found. They do admirably trained up by the side of any building, or along the garden fences, occupjing but little room and furnish- ing an abundance of the healthiest of fruits. Make the soil mellow and plant vines somewhat deeper than they stood in the nursery. Plant about eight feet apart, by the fence or building. For vineyard, make rows eight feet apart, six to ten feet in rows. BLACK. Bacchus—Bunch medium, com- pact, shouldered; berry below medium, black with blue bloom ; sprightly, juicy, an excellent wine grape. Champion (Talman)—This var- iety is valued chiefly for its earli- ness being a number of days earlier than the Hartford and nearly or quite equal to the lat- ter in flavor. August. Clinton—Bunches small and com- pact : berries round,black,pulp}', juicy, of medium quality : valu- able' for ^^-ine and culinkry pur- poses. Concord—A large, purplish-black grape, ripening about the mid- dle of September ; vines remark- ably vigorous and free from dis- ease. Downing—This is a remarkable •variety, one of the handsomest ever introduced ; bunch and berry verj' large: two clusters on a three year old vine weighed three and a half pounds.
