The front page of The Kaleidoscope, or literary and Scientific Mirror, 6 May 1823, reporting on Robert Owen's visit to Ireland where he outlined plans for a model village in Ireland, at the Rotunda in Dublin on 12 April 1823. Although no village was built despite his rapturous reception, and contacts with government officials, it is probable that the village of Portlaw, Waterford built in 1825 by the Quaker family the Malcolmsons was inspired by his vision.
