Maternal Portion of the Placenta.—As generally described, thematernal portion of the placenta consists of large cavities, or of asingle large cavity, which contain the maternal blood, and into whichthe villi of the chorion penetrate (Fig. 57). Into this maternal partof the viscns the curling arteries of the uterus pour their blood,which is collected from it by the uterine sinuses. The villi of thechorion, therefore, are suspended in a sac filled with maternal blood,which penetrates freely between them, and with which they arebrought into very intimate contact.
