After an educa-tion at Oxford and the Inner Temple, he ap-peared at court in his twentieth year, wherethe uncommon beauty of his person caused himto be graciously distinguished by queen Eliza-beth, who ever showed great sensibility towardsthat kind of excellence. He was then the cadetof an honourable, but impoverished house ;such, however, was his interest, that he gotinto parliament for two western boroughs, andwas knighted. He was one of the spiritedyoung noblemen who, in 1588, fitted out shipsat their own expence, to engage the Spanisharmada.
