In the little town of San Gabriel a building was erected a fewyears ago for the presentation of The Mission Play, written byJohn Stevens McGroarty. This play ran there for two years,depicting the first tragic days of San Diego with their sublimefaith, the glory of the Mission at Carmel in its prime, and thepathetic ending of their glory at Mission San Juan play is very beautiful and also very educational. San Gabriel was the angel announcing to Mar\ the mysteryof the incarnation. SAN LUIS SAN LUIS OBISPOThe first roof-tiles were made at this Mission. SAN LUIS OBISPO. On March 20, 1772, Fr. Crespi and Lieut. Fages, with twelvesoldiers, a muleteer, and a Lower California Indian, set out fromthe Presidio of San Carlos de Monterey, determined to surveythe port of San Francisco, for the purpose of finding a site for theMission which was to be erected there. At the close of the firstday they came to and forded, with some difficulty, what is nowthe Salinas River. The second evening found them camped onthe river San Benito. Then for ten or twelve days they journeyedon to and around the Bay of San Francisco, and finally returnedto Monterey. Meanwhile the ]\Iissions of San Gabriel and San Diego hadinformed Fr.
