BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF AIR An approximate determination of the number ofbacteria in the air can be made by the following simplemethod: Place a certain amount (50 ) of broth inan Erlenmeyer flask (Fig. 36, a). This flask is providedwith a rubber stopper (b), provided with two holes, through which the two glass tubes (c with a wide opening. —a ».> Fig. 36Apparatus for Determining the Number of Bacteria in a DefiniteVolume of Aira. Cotton plugs are then inserted at c and d,and the apparatus is steriUzed in the autoclav. Alarge bottle (/), containing 5 liters of water, is thenprovided with a rubber stopper, and also with two glasstubes {g and h); h is connected with a short piece ofrubber hose and a pinchcock (j). When the Erlen- EXAMINATION OF WATER, AIR, AND MILK 119 meyer flask and contents are sterilized, the tube d is con-nected, by means of the rubber hose e, with g, and theplug at c is removed. By opening the pinchcock i, 5liters of air are aspirated through the broth in flask flask is then disconnected, and i. is plated inagar and i in gelatin. The former is incubated at 37,and the latter
