Such belts are usually kept in stock by dealers, but it is 170 ABDOMINAL HERNL\. far better, when possible, to have them made to order, as theyusually contain rubber, which material rapidly deteriorateswhen lying unused. The English use. for cases of very large liernise, whatthey term the Rat-Tail Truss (fig. 83). It will be noted Fig. English Rat-tail truss. {A/acready. that this truss is quite similar to the French type, except thatit is vastly superior in that the direction of the pad is nearlycontinuous with the spring, bringing it directly over the canal,instead of over the pubic bone as in the German truss. Thespring in this truss is also long enough to clasp the oppositehip, which greatly aids in holding it firmly in place. It is to behoped that, eventually, our truss makers will abandon the pat-terns now used for making the French-German type and adoptthose more nearly approaching the English design.
