Southport, Merseyside, 14 July 2018. UK Weather. Sunny summer weather returns to the north-west as residents, holidaymakers, and tourists take light exercise on the coastal seafront promenade. The area out from the seawall has become progressively muddy with growing Spartina and clumps of vegetation further out with the mud being deposited during slack tide periods an open marine tidal environment. The area north of the pier-head and out from the seawall has become progressively muddy and in recent years the bog hole channel has moved northwards. In this area Spartina was initially treated with herbicide and then physically removed to a depth of 1 metre. This proved unsuccessful as plant and equipment became bogged down in deep mud as they as they tried to reach clumps of vegetation further out. In the end this was a fruitless exercise and a waste of funding as all the vegetation could not be removed and it quickly re-colonised the cleared areas
