Chris Baker hovers a HH-46D Sea Knight over the flight deck of a Republic of Korea (ROK) destroy as a USS Juneau (LPD 10) aviation boatswain mate guides the pilot over the ship’s flight deck March 26. Baker, a Helicopter Combat Support Squadron FIVE (HC-5) Detachment SIX (det. 6) pilot, flow 1,000 pound dummy pallets between Juneau and ROKS Yanmanchoon (DDH 973) to qualify the Korean ship landing signal enlisted on the procedures of a vertical replenishment (VERTREP). The VERTREP is part of the Foal Eagle, an annual joint and combined field training and maritime exercise between and ROK armed forces. The exercise, which began March 21, is designed to strengthen relationships and improve interoperability between the forces of the two nations through real world training scenarios. HC-5 det. 6 is currently embarked Essex providing airborne search and rescue, as well as supply and passenger transfers between the four ships of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) during its underway period which began March 1.
