The Commission recommended that a railway be constructed linking the termini with the docks and the General Post Office at St. Martin's Le Grand. A private bill for the Metropolitan Railway between Paddington and Farringdon received Royal Assent on 7 August 1854. The resulting Metropolitan Railway, which opened in 1863, was the first underground railway in the world, which led to the development of today's extensive London Underground network and the rapid expansion of the capital.
