The name of Lt. John Kipling, son of Rudyard Kipling, on the war memorial in the East Sussex village of Burwash. John lived with his family at Batemans, close to the village. At the outbreak of World war 1 he tried to join up bu failed because of his poor eyesight. Eventually his father, Rudyard Kipling, pulled some strings and begged a few favours and John Kipling was comissioned in the Irish Guards. He was sent to France and was killed at the Battle of Loos on the 29th September 1915, just 6 weeks before his 18th birthday. His body was never found and his father refused to accept his sons death. He tried all sorts of ways to see if he could gain information and possible proof of his being alive but to no avail. A gravestone to John Kipling is in the cemerty at Haisnes near Calais, France. John's story was told in the play and film "My Boy Jack."
