Iridium satellite flare in the night sky above the Isaac Newton Telescope at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma, Canary Islands. The Moon is rising at right above the Atlantic Ocean. This observatory is situated 2600 metres above sea level and is home to some of the world's leading research telescopes. The flare (streak of light) is caused by the reflection of sunlight from one of the three aluminium antennae on an Iridium communications satellite. The antennae are set at an angle from the axis of the satellite and reflect sunlight to Earth at certain times during an orbit. The satellite is one of the network of Iridium communications satellites that orbit the Earth. Photographed in 2017.
