Waves crashed against the ancient battlements of the Hot Walls in Old Portsmouth but even at 30 feet, were apparently not big or high enough to deter these brave swimmers, members of a group who strip off and jump in every day of the year whatever the weather. Coastguards were on alert for small boats in distress and the nearby hovercraft service from Southsea to Ryde, Isle of Wight was suspended. But these two men defied the conditions, the south-westerly gales and sea temperatures of just eight degrees Celsius to spend 20 minutes splashing around as the huge waves swept past them before smashing against the walls behind.
