When I was about thirteen years old, we lived on a ranchin Wyoming, about six miles from the stage road onwhich the mail was carried. One bright day in summer Istarted out horseback after the mail; the sky was quiteclear when I left the house, but before long the cloudsbegan to gather in the northwest. That is where all ourbad cloud-bursts come from at that time of year. Ofcourse I watched them closely. They were moving veryrapidly around in the direction I was going. Soon they be-gan to turn very white. I knew this meant a downpour,so I prepared myself for the storm. I no sooner got onmy rain coat than it began to rainvery hard. My horse, an intel-ligent animal, seemed to un-derstand. BY JEANNE DEMETRE, AGE 14. (GOLD BADGE.) I907-] ST. NICHOLAS LEAGUE 85
