Effluent treatment pond. An efflu- ent water treatment pond at a paper mill. Waste water from paper mills is run through a system of ponds that remove toxic pollutants from the water by sedimentation, filtration and bacterial fermen- tation. After treatment the water is clean enough to be run out into local rivers without harming wildlife.
